Women Agree With the GOP on Birth Control – US News and World Report

This ‘woman’ is so out-of-touch with reality it is beyond belief–are we sure this person isn’t writing under a female pen name?  Real women do NOT agree with the GOP; only female eunuchs who have been completely brainwashed by their fundamentalist patriarchal church ‘fathers’ would think like this.  They are victims suffering from stockholm syndrome.

Sexism vs. Racism: A Study in Contrasts

Despite the common perception that racism is a worse problem than sexism, there are a number of historical and current facts that support the argument that sexism is far more entrenched than racism. The current war on women in congress ought to be enough to end any debate.  Can anyone imagine what might be happening if this kind of discrimination were aimed at an ethnic group?  The arrogance of these lawmakers to openly attack all the gains of the women’s movement to date exposes the incredible level of sexist mentality to which they fall prey and the widespread acceptance of it.  But to remind everyone that this has long been the case historically, let me point out some facts:  black male former slaves got the right (at least on paper) to vote 50 years before women did, got recognized under the 14th amendment as “persons” over a century before women did, black civil rights got recognized before women’s civil rights, we still don’t have the equal rights amendment which would be equivalent to the Civil Rights Act, we have two holidays set aside for men of color (in addition to all the ones for white men) and not a single one recognizing a woman, we elected a black male President before a white female President, women are far less represented in Congress per capita than are blacks and latinos, pompous talk show hosts who would be afraid to raise the issue of race mock and denigrate women with impunity, race-motivated crimes make big news while violent crimes against women are so commonplace they are not even considered newsworthy, crimes targeting women just recently were recognized by congress as hate crimes while crimes targeting racial groups have long been seen as such, and the murder of the tens of millions of women during the witch hunts is barely spoken of while we hear endlessly of the suffering of other groups.

Some interesting history is that the Civil Rights Act (passed in 1964) is the rough equivalent to the ERA (first introduced in 1923 and still not passed), while the 15th amendment assuring the vote for men regardless of race (passed in 1870) is the equivalent of the 19th amendment for women (not passed until 1920).  The  passage of the 14th amendment actually made things worse for women by specifically guaranteeing the rights of men (regardless of race) while leaving women out, despite the efforts of suffragists to get women included as citizens and to use it to exercise the right to vote.  Some woman suffragists even opposed the 15th amendment because they wanted voting rights extended to everyone, but had to abandon this as black men getting the vote had more public support.  The 2008 elections are one of the most recent blatant examples of sexism being more pronounced than racism with a previously unknown black male candidate muscling out the white female frontrunner, elbowing her aside and getting fawned over by news anchors while she was severely scrutinized and criticized at every turn.  Even many bigoted white men were willing to vote for a black man over a white woman and people on the left, blind to their sexism, saw voting for a black man even greater proof of their open-mindedness than voting for a white woman.

In the spirit of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Women’s History Month, I say it is high time that women be recognized under the law as having equal rights to men, that women’s rights finally be given the attention they deserve, and that sexism be identified and denounced as much as racism is.  We demand equal acknowledgment and protection by society and under the law.  It is time to pass THE EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT!

Death by Marriage | Rape Victim Amina Filali | The Nahmias Cipher Report

This story of Amina Filali is demonstrative of the cruel injustice meted out to women and girls in patriarchal societies that treat women as property .  This young girl’s agony is expressed so graphically by her decision to kill herself following the outrageous abuse by her perpetrator, her family, her culture, and the legal system that condemned her to live in perpetual emotional and physical torture.  The convoluted logic that would consider marrying a victim off to her perpetrator “resolution” could only be deemed sane in a culture completely benighted and consumed by patriarchal prejudice.

This is what the fundamentalist fanatics would return this country to if they could—a hell where women’s worth is based solely on their sexuality, “marriageability”, and domestication as brood mares, and which reduces a female person’s life to nothing more than a object to be possessed first by her father and then her husband, “sanctified” by the church, and legitimized by the state.

May the women of Morocco succeed in overturning this horrendous law and women of every nation  throw off the chains of oppressive patriarchal religion and culture so that no more women will be put in the terrible position Amina Filali found herself!  Blessed be, Amina.  Rest in peace in the arms of the goddess and be made whole again.

Rich People Are Unethical | Accounting Degree Online

This is a very interesting graphic which exposes how wealth is related to an array of unethical behaviors, dishonesty being the major theme.  I think most people will find this thought-provoking and likely, as in my case, confirmatory of their own experience and suspicions.  I have long said that people who have more, especially those who are ultra rich, have, more often than not, come by their wealth by less than honest means and that those of us of more modest means are often where we are socioeconomically because we don’t have the stomach for what it takes to “get ahead” (a phrase that implies unfair advantage).  It also touches on the issue of empathy which, in my mind, is the key faculty that prevents us from exploiting others and treating them unkindly.  See what you think!

Sarah Buttenwieser: We Are In Texas Now

This article examines the importance of respecting the need for reproductive rights, regardless of the woman’s circumstances of whether her story is more or less sympathetic to someone else, and that changing small details of punitive laws like Texas’ coerced sonogram law is no solution, that they need to be abolished altogether.  I would like to point out that this is for the simple reason that it is no one else’s business.  The concept of choice refers to the woman herself, not the church, the state, her insurance company, her physician, her hospital, pharmacist, ad nauseum.  It is HER choice and her choice alone.

The writer points out that many people have been ignoring the unabated attempts to block access to abortion (focusing more on choice) resulting in our being in the situation in which we now find ourselves, where bills proposing this type of invasiveness are proliferating.  I would add that it is also why we are now seeing the escalation of attempts to control access to birth control as well.  Both choice and access are under attack, with fetal personhood bills and laws criminalizing abortion spreading, and this is why we must pass the Equal Rights Amendment so that we don’t have to fight each and every one of these assaults on women’s reproductive rights as a separate event, can challenge them on Constitutional grounds, and can finally have equal standing before the law!

Doc Tells Fellow MDs: No Coercive Ultrasounds; It’s Rape | Care2 Causes

Kudos to this wonderful doctor who actually puts his/her patients first! Thank you so much for standing up against this cruel, invasive, misogynist procedure.  It is, after all, against the Hippocratic Oath, “First, Do No Harm” for any doctor to subject her/his patient to such coercion, an act of violence with real psychological and emotional consequences.

If The “War On Women” Will Hurt Dems, Why Is The GOP Trying To Co-Opt It? | Care2 Causes

More lies, distortion, and disinformation from the radical right wing–what a surprise!   This is really about the only area where there is a very clear difference between the two corrupt, corporate parties.  Republican=Misogynist almost across the board–the Tea Baggers being the worst of the lot.  One of the few decent Republicans, Olympia Snowe, has resigned partly or even largely because of the unrelenting war on women by fellow Republicans. The fact is that women’s issues are about the only thing Obama and the Democrats do right (most of the time), though of course it is motivated out of self-interest as they know they are doomed without the woman vote.

The Negro Project and Margaret Sanger

It is very telling that this webpage starts out with a Biblical quote about “choosing life so both you and your descendants may live”, which  says it all regarding their motives, in my opinion, and confirmed my suspicion that this is a smear job. Missing from this treatise is any statement about the background of the writer or the “say so” marchers other than that they were “ministers”, which again exposes their true motives.  These are ministers, you can be sure, of patriarchal Christian  fundamentalist sects, most likely ultra-conservative Baptists who, like their fundamentalist papist and Islamic counterparts,  take a particular dislike to any freedom on the part of women, especially sexual freedom, while taking great umbrage to what they perceive as racial prejudice.  It is amazing how hypocritical this is, though it is par for the course.  While it is undeniable that there was racism inherent in eugenicism, sexism is inherent in patriarchal religion.

The “immigrants” who were flooding the country at the time Margaret Sanger was campaigning for birth control were overwhelmingly Irish, so if anyone should be so offended by her work, I suppose it should be someone like me with my Irish heritage. Instead, I am very thankful that Irish women were able to not be powerless over their lives and not live in squalor, and it seems to me no one ought to be offended about a movement if it helped their ancestors gain some control over endless childbearing and resulting poverty through birth control, which is voluntary.  Forced sterilization is a different situation; however, why anyone would think forced childbearing is preferable escapes me. The issue is CHOICE!

Nobody forces anyone to go to Planned Parenthood, use birth control, or submit to any procedure, nor do  certain groups get targeted for services over others, regardless of any attitudes anyone might have had who started the birth control movement a century ago, when ideas about so-called racial superiority were widely held. The use of current attitudes to judge people in the past and apply that to the present as if everyone who promotes birth control now is a eugenicist is  faulty reasoning—not to mention we have to judge people by the standard of their times, and Margaret Sanger is a hero to anyone who is sane, regardless of any such attitudes.

The other glaring issue I want to point out is the flip side of this argument.  Do people have a right to dominate others because they choose to overpopulate and have endless children? It’s no accident that the Catholic church and the Mormon church promote unbridled childbearing because they not only want to repress women’s right to self- determination, but they crave huge numbers of followers over whom they have dominion and whom they can control.  Children born into Catholicism, Mormonism, Islam,  and fundamentalist Protestant sects such as the Baptists, are conscripted into these patriarchal belief systems involuntarily in order to swell the influence of these churches over their followers and society at large, which we have witnessed increasingly because of their extreme fanatical views on abortion and birth control and resultant overpopulating. I believe the rest of us have some say in being taken over by sheer numbers and about having the earth destroyed because people are so hellbent on procreating in such outrageous numbers, hiding behind their religious justifications. The people having huge numbers of children affect all of us on this planet and threaten  all of our survival and if they think it is ok to force women into childbearing, perhaps it is time for them to be forced to stop overpopulating us into extinction and spreading their oppression!

This is a very laudable effort because these control freaks really need to be shaken awake with regard to the central issue here:  a person has a sovereign right over her/his body.  Period.  This ongoing assault on women’s basic fundamental human rights is the best example of why not only do we need to get religion out of politics and government once and for all, but why the Equal Rights Amendment needs to be ratified.  Until women have standing in the Constitution, we will be second-class citizens and be vulnerable to endless attacks.  No other group is subjected to this kind of unrelenting assault–we MUST pass the ERA.

Louisiana Lawmaker Wants Evolution Taught In Science Classes | Care2 Causes

It is very refreshing to see some sanity being brought back into the classroom.  Teaching creationism in the classroom and passing it off as “science” is another example of the infringement of religion into our secular life and another example of the blurring of the line between church and state.  Further, as the author of the article states, religion is being cynically exploited by the corporate elite who want to continue to dispute the scientific fact of global warming so that they can keep polluting with impunity.  This is why we need an amendment to the Constitution to do away with corporate “personhood” so we can put an end to corporate attempts to brainwash students with their disinformation, because they are behind this nonsense, and get away with it because as “persons” they have free speech rights and, of course, an army of lawyers to defend these “rights” in court.
